BEFORE THE OLD MAN DIED
I used to walk in shadows
I stayed out of the sun
I used to sort informtaion
and I used to pass it on
Before the old man died
Before we came alive
Before the old man died
I used to follow orders
Did my duty like a son
But I fell in love with whispers
And I turned them into songs
Before the old man died
Before we came alive
Before the old man died
For the way he ruined our mother
Not enough blood can run
We had plans me and my brother
Every day I cleaned the gun
Before the old man died
Before we came alive
Before the old man died
Before we came alive

THE SOCIAL COMMENT ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IS BOUGHT UP IN THIS SONG.
ReplyDeleteRepetition:
Where: "Before the old man died/ Before we came alive"
Why: chilling effect on the audience.
- wants us to feel his pain: he never lived until his father died.
Where: "I use to walk in shadows/ I stayed out of the sun"
Why: Shadows symbol of hiding, sun a symbol of life and living.
- he hid from life
- didn't want to get in his fathers way.
-Scared/ fear
- Couldn't be out there in the world
- Paranoia- what's going to happen
- Abuse- a social comment on abuse.
Where: "I use to sort information and I use to pass it on"
Why; Information is knowledge- knowledge is power. He had the power but he gave it away - sign of weakness.
- Didn't use it because he was scared- this makes this song a comment on human weakness.
- Lost his power. Lost control over his life
Where: "I use to follow orders/ Did my duty like a son"
ReplyDeleteWhy: powerless
- military like
- like a son - simile
- Didn't feel like his real son- no relationship
- Dad was like his boss.
- Dad had all the power.
Where: "For the way he ruined our mother/ Not enough blood can run"
Why: revenge- won't solve anything
- angry- hates his dad
- 'ruined' emphasises this song is about abuse.
Where: "We had plans, me and my brother/ Everyday I cleaned the gun"
Why: Didn't kill his father because he's a better person than his dad.
